Nothing's further outside my music box than polka!

Okay, I'm doing my OSF early because I've got a really heavy day tomorrow so I checked the theme and it's "Outside My Box". Now, since I'm an early bird this week, I couldn't check around to see how everyone else interpreted this theme so I'm just going to have to wing it and figure it means any type of music that's not really "my thang".

Now I like a lot of kinds of music but there are a few that I can do without and one is polka. So, in the hopes of annoying you too; grab yer beer and let's polka with the Polka Party from the fifties:

And, of course, if you love Polka you must remember Rootie Kazootie - Polka Dottie - what a hoot!

Roll out the barrel! Happy OSF!

If you'd like to participate in the Old School Friday Meme check out this link: http://www.conversationswithmarva.com/osf/ and join the fun!

Why I like it when guests come to visit - Guest Post by Pixel

From PopArtDiva.com

THIRTEEN REASONS I LIKE IT WHEN MOM HAS VISITORS:
  1. I am very social and I like to see people other than Mom sometimes. I love Mom but I need variety.
  2. Mom's visitors don't know our rules and they let me get away with stuff when Mom's not looking.
  3. I get more cookies because I do lots of tricks that Mom's guests like, I can growl like a bear, roll over, dance, get shot dead and then raised from the dead, then I pray, I fetch things on command and I shake hands and give five.
  4. See Mom makes me do all those things and only gives me one cookie - her visitors give me a cookie for each trick.
  5. I get lots more pets and hugs.
  6. I get to sniff all sorts of new and interesting things like suitcases, purses, clothes and shoes.
  7. Mom doesn't pay as much attention to me but that means I can do stuff I normally don't get to do.
  8. If they bring their doggie I get to play keep away with all my toys! I love this! I show off all my toys and then I don't let their doggie have them. I'm greedy with my toys.
  9. I get to play chase with the other doggie in the house and outside.
  10. I get to try other doggie food and water. Why does other doggie's food and water taste better than mine?
  11. I get to sneak out and snuggle with the guest peoples at night - it's fun to snuggle with new peoples!
  12. I get to stay up late and share martinis and munchies every night!
  13. I get to go fun places like parks and beaches and stuff!
Mom will be back next week with her retro nostalgia stuff - after all her guests are gone and she's slept for a day or two (that's what she said). I hope you enjoyed my guest post - I really like posting blogs and maybe I'll get one of my own soon!

TV Cowboys, Western Heroes: Wild Bill Hickok is 171 years old today

From PopArtDiva.com

Today is Wild Bill Hickok's birthday, he was born on May 27th, 1837. I did a Pop Art of Wild Bill Hickok and also a Pop Art of Bat Masterson some time ago, so naturally I started humming the old tv theme to Bat Masterson, lol.

This brought to mind all those old cowboy shows I used to watch on television like The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, The Rifleman, Bonanza and The Gene Autrey Show and, of course, Happy Trails from the Roy Rogers Show. I don't know about you but I remember all these themes - they're etched into my head's hard drive - I remember most of the words to all and all of the words to most, lol.

So, join me on a Happy Trail down the Memory Lane of Cowboys, Bad Guys, Shoot-em Ups and Western Soap Operas from the good old days:

Phoning It In, Happy Birthday Cher, Bedtime for Bonzo - It's a mish mash of retro pop culture today

Phone It In and Beam Me Up:
I've been really busy lately and have been "cheating" a bit on my posting - with nine blogs and several online stores and websites it can be a little overwhelming when life gets busy offline too!

It brought to mind that old phrase "Phoning It In" - and I started to laugh because with today's technology you really can "Phone It In"! You can send posts to your blogs, send videos from your cell phone to YouTube and even Twitter and Facebook via your phone.

When I think back to my childhood and remember how cool I thought it would be to have a Dick Tracy Wrist Watch Phone or a Star Trek Communicator, I look at my cell phone and realize that we've gone far beyond "where no man has gone before" in communication devices. Now if only I can figure out a way to beam myself around I'll be a happy little PopArtDiva, lol.

Birthdays, Bonzo & Bono:
Happy Birthday to Cher & Joe Cocker - today is also the birthday of the late former President Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Stewart.

So here's some birthday tribute videos of The Sonny & Cher Show and Ronald Reagan I'd thought you'd get a kick out of - the second one especially:

Many of you who are too young to remember might enjoy this trailer for the movies that Ronald Reagan is most well known for - Bedtime for Bonzo:

Now,here's a great clip from The Sonny & Cher Show WITH Ronald Reagan when he was Governor of California - this one had me laughing at loud and you will too (remember the "coveted Bono Award"?:

Retro Commercials, Dobie Gillis, Reggie Jackson Candy Bar & Movie Misquotes

A few months ago, the week before the Oscars I did a whole Academy Awards week and posted some of the most famous "misquoted movie quotes". Today Yahoo posted some too which had a few more - but mostly I just wanted to say "You heard it here first!" - LOL.

Pop Culture Icons born today include:
  • Reggie Jackson (1946) Baseball right fielder who played for five different teams from 1967 to 1987. He won three consecutive World Series titles as a member of the Oakland A's in the early 1970s and also won two consecutive titles with the New York Yankees. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.
  • Brooks Robinson (1937) Baseball Player who played his entire 23-year career with the Baltimore Orioles.(1955–77). Robinson was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.
  • Dwayne Hickman (1934) Dobie Gillis of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.
  • Robert Morse (1931) ++++ Barnaby in The Matchmaker (Play), Barnaby in The Matchmaker How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.
  • Pernell Roberts (1930) Best known for playing Adam Cartwright in the television series Bonanza.
  • Perry Como (1912 - 2001) "Mr. C" was an American crooner probably most known for his hit "Catch A Falling Star". He received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1987, was inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2007 and was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
  • Frank Capra (1897- 1991) American film director best known for directing "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"
Since today is Reggie's birthday I thought I'd remind you of The Reggie Bar - remember the candy bar named after Reggie in the eighties?

I'd also like to say Happy Birthday to Dwayne Hickman and show you the opening of "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" with a Pillsbury commercial:

This week's Old School Friday is "Greatest of all time". Oh come on Marva! Greatest what? Greatest rocker, greatest R&B, greatest Peggy Lee Female Impersonator??? You really are going to give me a chance to mess with this theme aren't ya??? Okay, here goes - Greatest of the greatest old school, nostalgia style, retro music, musicians, bands, groups, fakers & the ones I listen to all the bloody time:

GROUP OF ALL TIME: What are you crazy? THE BEATLES! When I'm 64 - because I'm getting awfullllly close (crap!):

SURFIN' MUSIC: The Beach Boys - They rocked then, they rock now, they're dudes, dude! Fun, Fun, Fun - because they just were! (Man, they were young in the 60s, but then so as I.)

OLD STYLE ROCKER: Jerry Lee Lewis - Didn't like him but I loved his music! Great Balls of Fire - Because I get to say "balls" and because it is goodness gracious great!

BEST CRUISIN' MUSIC: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - because these were the guys who dominated my 8-track in the sixties and Green River because I finally wore it out and had to get it again.

RETRO BAD BOY: Jim Morrison of The Doors, The Lizard King, Mojo Rising King of nasty, sexy, hot - black - leather pants - hormonal - teenybopper dreams: Why Light My Fire? Because he did!

MUSIC FROM A GENERATION OTHER THAN MINE: Swing, Big Band, Crooners - because this was the music my mom and I listened to and the music she taught me to dance to: In The Mood - My favorite swing tune and one I'm always in the mood for.

GIRL GROUP: I cheated here because a) I can't pick and b) this video was too retro cool. I'm such a rebel but I'll make you happy baby!

GREATEST SHOWMANSHIP: KISS - Yes, I posted this before but it's just too great to miss - KISS and That 70's Show together? It's a retro two-fer. Dedicated to the days when I did rock and roll all night - the 70s!

I could go on and on and on but the page would never load BUT. . . .one more just for you, MsMahvehlus and The OSF clan (hehehehehehehe):

FORGIVE ME FATHER FOR I HAVE PIGGED OUT

MY THIRTEEN FAVORITE SINFUL FOODS:
(Not necessarily in this order as my cravings are not subject to any kind of organization)
  1. Jack in the Box Tacos - These are probably the worst fast food items out there and I love them and have for 30 years. And you still get 2 for a buck!
  2. Winchell's plain cake donut with a white glaze and chocolate sprinkles. I haven't seen a Winchell's for years but I have been known to bully local donut shops into making these for me. I've even gone so far as to make them myself - but donuts are a pain in the butt to make.
  3. Krispy Kremes - hot and warm right out of their store. Not from an outlet and not cooled down. I have NEVER made it home with an intact box of fresh Krispy Kremes, usually I eat 6 before I get home and then I feel like a pig - but a happy sugar filled pig.
  4. Premium chocolate ice cream with sliced bananas and fresh strawberries that have been blended with sugar into a coulee. No bowl required just pour a little of the strawberry mixture and toss in a few slices of banana on top of the pint of ice cream and dig in.
  5. Old fashioned popcorn with enough butter to sink the Titanic. I'm talking popcorn popped on the stove here, not microwaved - and real butter, not that diesel fuel you get in the movies! I loved popcorn so much I took a bag on my first cruise because I'd heard (back in those days anyway) that they didn't have popcorn! My steward took it down to the kitchen and they popped the entire bag! I opened my stateroom door and there were 3 stewards standing there holding huge bowls of the popped corn that should have lasted the whole cruise. I took one gynourmous bowl for myself and sent the other 2 down to the bars.
  6. Baby back ribs - a whole slab, and don't you DARE touch my plate! Accompanied by crisp french fries, baked beans and coleslaw - and an ice cold Bohemia beer.
  7. A real clam bake - but keep the clams and get the hell out of my way if you're standing in front of the lobster!!! I will eat fresh lobster until I grow claws myself. In a pinch you may serve me King Crab legs.
  8. An honest to god, real Chocolate Malted. Made with chocolate ice cream and lots of malt, blended just enough to mix the ingredients. A metal spoon must stand up in it - I warn anyone making one for me that if the spoon doesn't do this they have to start over!
  9. Der Wienerschnitzel chili dogs. What can I say, I get cravings for them and have to have about 6 at least once a year.
  10. Designer Martinis - I love martinis so much I have a whole website devoted to them: The Martini Diva where I've posted over 100 unique martini recipes.
  11. Avocados - I love avocados and they're actually good for you but they are fattening so that's how they made it on this list.
  12. A Porterhouse steak - cooked medium rare to medium, seared on the outside, tender and dripping in juices.
  13. My Mom's Gingersnap Cookies - really molasses cookies, baked just until they're soft and chewy with a crispy edge and served with a big glass of ice cold milk.

Smoothie Commercials - Retro? Not so much, but funny!

I'm having a Martini Smoothie Week over at The Martini Diva and it made me wonder if there were any retro smoothie ads out there. I did find one commercial for a Barbie shaved ice toy which is the epitome of pushing brand merchandising to the edge:

But a little deeper digging scored me this hilarious gem from Jack in the Box selling fruit smoothies as a cure for MENOPAUSE! Yup, you heard me right - I'm still laughing:

Okay, Jack, I forgive you for the crappy bag that let all my food fall out on the asphalt last week now. . .

DO YOU BELIEVE IN GLOBAL WARMING?

SOAPBOX SATURDAY
Bringing Baby Boomers Out of the Old Fogey Closet
A Meme for the Young Minded Over Fifty Crowd
------------------
GLOBAL WARMING - YES OR NOT SO MUCH?

Our weather out here has been abnormal. The weather across the country is off. It's snowed in San Francisco twice in the last few years and just recently it was 100 degrees in Santa Cruz while it was only 80 here in the high desert on the same day. We're seeing Catagory 5 tornadoes - something we never saw when I was growing up in Kansas. One day it's 98 and the next it's 65. The East Coast is having a heat wave in February while the Southwest is getting snow in April.

I know a lot of people don't believe in "global warming" but I wonder how can so many of our most educated and brilliant scientists be wrong? Supposedly we are - or should be - heading towards another ice age but then why are the ice caps melting and the Polar Bears being evicted by Mother Nature? And are the honey bees really disappearing?

I'm very curious to see what other baby boomers think. After all, we've been around long enough to see weather pattern changes. We may even have a few relatives who've been around even longer. Just out of curiosity ask around and see what your friends and family think - what do you think? Let me know - let's see if the baby boom generation has a different take on the issue of "global warming" than the populace in general shall we?

Old School Friday - SOUL TRAIN

I didn't watch Soul Train much - it was big in the 70s but I was busy going to college and working full time. When I did get to watch what I remember the most was the big Soul Train sign with the overlapping letters in it - all shiny and gold behind the stage and, of course, the dancers. I would try to catch the show when I could to see the new dance floor moves. God forbid I should ever get caught doing The Freddy again, lol.

It might interest you all to know that the show ran for 35 years! It started in 1971 and ran through 2006. It's not on television anymore BUT - hold on to your platforms! - there's a movie in the works! In the script writing phase, Soul Train The Movie is about two male dancers and is a comedy. Okay, if you say so. If it makes it to the big screen I will certainly be among those to go see it.

Here's a fun video showing the Soul Train Line - looking back at these fashions just gives me a giggle!

Here's The Miracles - all decked out in hot pink!

Here's the O'Jays with Back Stabber from 1972:

And The Temptations - Superstar:

Old Time Radio Shows - The Shadow, The Lone Ranger, Dragnet and More

I found the coolest sight last night where you can listen to great old radio shows from the thirties and forties. They are free to listen to online, the quality is a bit scratchy but it's kind of fun to hear the original Dagwood and Blondie (Arthur Lake and Penny Singleton) from the radio show, or listen to Benny Goodman's original 1937 radio broadcasts and there's even George Burns!

If you've never heard any of these old programs or were born into the television generation and not the radio generation you might also enjoy hearing some of these classic, retro radio programs and Saturday serial radio broadcasts. I was born after WWII - I'm a Boob Tube Baby - so I never sat around and listened to the radio with my family but I can now enjoy these great shows while as an adult:

THE SHADOW:

THE LONE RANGER

DRAGNET:

THE HAUNTING HOUR, THE MASK:

Stay tuned and I'll post more as I find them!

Will The Real Dr. Pepper Please Stand Up?

Has the original formula for Dr. Pepper been found? According to a story in the Associated Press, Bill Waters may have found the very first formula for what has become one of our favorite soft drinks, Dr. Pepper. While in the Texas Panhandle Mr. Waters found an old handwritten ledger from the late 1800s and bought it for $200.

As he studied the ledger he discovered the book came from the drugstore in Waco, Texas where the now famous soft drink, Dr. Pepper, was invented and the ledger contained a formula for "D Peppers Pepsin Bitters." He believes it might be a precursor to the Dr. Pepper pop formula.

Whether it is or isn't, it's certainly a fun story involving American pop culture and it reveals a little history on an American brand that has been part of our lives for over a century. The story caught my eye because I have been a fan of Dr. Pepper since a neighbor who worked at the company paid me for yard work with ice cold bottles of the unique soft drink. I'm right there with Forrest Gump, I could drink Dr. Pepper until I had to pee like a racehorse!

Now, here's the way I remember the bottle - with the 10 - 2 - 4, in a commercial from the sixties:

And, of course, here's the latest Dr. Pepper ad, featuring their newest flavor Cherry and Gene Simmons of KISS fame:

I'm a Pepper - wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?

REUNION NOSTALGIA - Music That Rocked You Back When

This week's Old School Friday Theme is Family Reunions. Unfortunately I have never been to a family reunion! But, I can put a twist on this too (Ms Marva, did you expect anything different from me?)

This is also the time of year that school reunions start popping up. So, forgive me for twisting this theme so hard it squeeked but I had no choice! And besides my long time friends from high school are my family now. In fact, this year I'll be attending my 40th High School Reunion - or avoiding it, I haven't decided which yet, lol.

BTW, this is also the 40th Anniversary of the original Woodstock Festival which I attended so that's kind of a family reunion for me too!

And what other music could I choose for this topic but our favorite cruisin' music - the songs we blasted from our cars as we cruised our favorite hang-outs way back in the day? Why, none other than these classics from the Class of '69 and the original Woodstock - these are just a few of the songs that would have been played at any family reunion that I hosted:

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL (CCR!) and GREEN RIVER:

THE DOORS - LIGHT MY FIRE

JIMI HENDRIX - PURPLE HAZE live from the stage at WOODSTOCK:

THE BEATLES - YELLOW SUBMARINE

JANIS JOPLIN - PIECE OF MY HEART from WOODSTOCK, 1969:

and - LIKE JOE COCKER - I get by WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS:
