Going a little RETRO with my PIN UP GIRL IN A MARTINI GLASS

OLIVIA - GIRL IN A MARTINI GLASS

I've always loved the Vargas Pin Up Girl style illustrations. There was something so classic forties about them and they were just plain fun. I also loved some of the martini glass versions, as a kid the idea of someone sitting in a glass tickled my fancy.

My alter ego, The Martini Diva, has a perfect place for some newer versions from me at The Martini Diva Boutique and so I have started a series of GIRLS IN A MARTINI GLASS in a fun cartoon illustration style.

My second in this series is OLIVIA - named after the tumbling olives falling from her martini glass:

She's a perky little blond in a hot little red swimsuit kicking up her heels in a martini glass - a martini diva cartoon illustration sure to put the happy in your happy hour!

Check her out on Posters, T-shirts, Cups, Cards, Aprons, Caps & other Fun Gifts!

Get Your Happy Hour On! And don't miss my very first GIRL IN A MARTINI GLASS - Little Red

Collect the whole series!

The POP ART DIVA RETRO TRIVIA CONTEST - Final Results

I didn't get ONE ENTRY! NOT ONE!

I guess I made this contest too complicated or maybe it was just too much effort to play. Either way no one bothered to send me any answers so there is no winner. Interesting since my blog hits doubled during the contest, huh?

I even triple checked to make sure an e-mail addressed to DKNYcontest@PopArtDiva.com came through to my mail box. I checked my spam folder. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

For $165 dollars worth of perfume I thought people would do the work but I guess I was wrong!

I may try another, simpler type of contest next week and I'll get back to you before Friday if I do. Right now I'm a little bugged I did all that work for nothing so I'm going to have a martini and watch a comedy on TV!

If you sent me an entry
PLEASE leave me a comment and let me know and resend your entry. The first e-mail I get - if I get any - with the correct answers will win the perfume.

Later 'gaters.

Hug Me, Kiss Me, TWEET ME - Twitter makes it to Classic Retro Candy Status!

(FOR THOSE OF YOU PLAYING MY RETRO TRIVIA CONTEST
CONTEST QUESTION #3 IS THE POST JUST BELOW THIS!)

I woke up this morning, turned on the TV and the first thing I saw was my screen filled with this 2010 version of a classic candy - the adorable Sweetheart Candies that have been a part of Valentine's Day ever since that first schoolgirl/schoolboy crush way back in the fifties has entered the computer age.

Yes folks, this year you will be able to give your Valentine a Sweetheart candy heart that says "TWEET ME" or "TEXT ME".

As far as I'm concerned Twitter has officially arrived - it has now become part of classic candy marketing and has entered into pop culture history thanks to Necco and our beloved Sweethearts Candy Hearts.

I'm curious, do they have one that says "Friend Me" for Facebook fans or maybe they should do one that says "Google Me"?

Happy Sugar Bytes Everyone!

THE POP ART DIVA BLOG IS HAVING A CONTEST

Yes, I finally decided to have a contest and it's a very Pop Art Diva style of contest:
  • What kind of contest? A RETRO TRIVIA QUESTION CONTEST - What else would you expect from me?
  • What does it cost to enter? NOTHING except your time to participate in the quiz for the next week.
  • What are the Rules? THE CONTEST DETAILS are below at the bottom of this post.
What will you win? This adorable set of 3 limited edition DKNY CANDY APPLE FRAGRANCES donated by DKNY:I was contacted by DKNY and asked if I would be interested in promoting their new limited edition Delicious Candy Apples Collection of fragrances which is launching in February. It's not my practice to promote any products - other than my own - but they said they would give me a set of these fun new Pop Art looking perfumes as a prize to give away to my readers, as well as a set for myself! Gotta be honest with you I loved their packaging and thought you might too! (Guys don't run away just yet, you could really score some points with your current lady if you win!) The bottles are totally Pop Art style - fun, whimsical and in some hot pop art colors.

The limited edition Delicious Candy Apples Collection is the latest entry into the best-selling DKNY family of his and her fragrances. The three new fragrances are all about pairing the sweetness of candy with a ripe, juicy apple. The fragrances are currently only available at DKNY.com and will be available in Sephora, Department stores and Perfumeries nationwide in February 2010.

Each fragrance has it's own personality. The Sweet Caramel comes in the Green Apple Bottle, the Ripe Raspberry in the Red Apple and the Juicy Berry in the Purple Apple. Sweet Caramel opens with candy apple, pear and marshmallow notes, which blend into a heart of jasmine, muguet and violet leaves and a drydown of caramel and vanilla. Ripe Raspberry opens with raspberry, apple and lime notes, a heart of peonies and lily, and a drydown of cola accord. Juicy Berry opens with black currant, blackberry, pear and lychee notes, blends into a heart of rose petals and apple blossom, and finishes with sandalwood and sugary blond woods.

My favorite is the Juicy Berry - probably because of the blending of some of my favorite fruit essences with the rose and apple. These frangrances remind me of some of my favorite martini recipes from The Martini Diva and they fit right in with my birthday celebration martinis this month based on CANDY! How could I not love that?

Here's their adorable little animated apple dancing video - enjoy:

Uh Oh, ONE DAY CLOSER TO SIXTY! ACK!

Yesterday was my last birthday before the big 60 and I wanted to celebrate the end of my fifties. I've been thinking how I wanted to end my last birthday before turning 60 and posted 13 things I'd like to do a week ago.

Like I said, I celebrate my birthdays the whole month of January so I have a lot of time to do things! So far so good, I got a new microwave (number 8 on my list) , watched the new Star Trek again (as well as Julie & Julia - number 6 on the list) , will be going to Avatar this weekend (number 3) and have a date for my all-you-can-eat crab dinner (number 2)!
Yesterday was my actual birthday and I did a few more on my list plus some! Here's my itinerary and some photos from my day:

Drove to meet my friend Audrey over in the OC. Then did a cruise for old time's sake in my old stompin' grounds in Tustin (kind of a side trip of Number 4 on my list), we drove by my old house, stopped for breakfast in a great little French Bakery/Restaurant, stopped by Claro's Italian Market/Deli, walked through this lovely Unity Church Meditation Garden (amazing fountains, landscaping,a great Koi pond, plus luscious oranges and tangerines to munch right off the trees), I'd forgotten all about taking pictures until this point:

Then off to have my toes blinged, Number 11 on my list - Okay, you're gonna laugh, but I told you I wanted to bling my toes - everyone in the nail parlor was cracking up - I LOVE THEM, They're so Pop Art Diva, lol:

Then for Number 4 on my list - doodling around Newport Beach for a bit - the surf was really up (thanks to a tropical storm) and there was a larger number of surfers there than normal to take advantage of it:
Then Audrey and I started window shopping and hunting for a place for our seafood lunch (my number 2 was for a crab/seafood dinner) we had steamed clams because it just sounded good, garlic bread and I tried out this new Elderflower Martini at The Harbor Grill in Dana Point - believe me I'll be tweaking this one soon enough for The Martini Diva - it was really interesting, but it lacked a garnish! Seriously, at least drop in a lemon twist! Me? I would have garnished it with a candied edible flower at least!

I really hate it when restaurants come singing Happy Birthday to you at your table and Audrey did not tell them it was my birthday but our sweet waitress overheard us talking and quietly brought me this excellent cheesecake with a nice bit of raspberry coulee - sorry, we dug into it before I remembered to take the picture so A and I re lit the candle and did a birthday cheesecake rerun:

Then heading back towards the Irvine Spectrum to hit the gourmet cupcake store - a little later than we'd planned but perfect because it was dark and the SweetSpot Baker's Workshop is right by the Ferris wheel. It was all lit up and lent a nice carnival atmosphere to the decorating of my Gourmet Birthday Cupcake (number 10 on my list)- you can buy ready made cupcakes in a variety of flavors and/or you can buy plain ones and have at their decorating bar:

My cupcake ended up looking like a Cupcake Critter - I swear I could have done this all the rest of the night, serious artist foodie fun - take the kids, they'll love it:

I bought a few extra to thank my two neighbor/friends who babysat Pixel & Tink for the day. This whole new gourmet cupcake fad is what inspired me to do my new POP ART CUPCAKES:

So, there you have it, my 59th Birthday in a nutshell - no, no Disneyland this year. I really just wanted to have a day of little planned things and spontaneous surprises and that's just what I did!

Today I rest, tomorrow Lake Arrowhead! Okay, signing off - heading back into a cupcake coma.

TODAY IS ELVIS' 75th BIRTHDAY!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAY ELVIS
January 8th, 1935 - August 16th, 1977

Today would have been Elvis' 75th Birthday and I'm posting some links to last year's Elvis week posts and some fun Elvis Trivia to celebrate. If you are a huge Elvis fan you might enjoy reading these posts:

ELVIS TRIVIA
  • Elvis was a twin, his brother Jesse, died at birth. Elvis was the younger of the two boys, having been delivered 35 minutes after his late twin brother Jesse.
  • In 1956, Elvis released his first RCA single, had his first television appearance, and his first movie release.
  • Roy Orbison recorded a song that he dedicated to Elvis entitled "Hound Dog Man".
  • Elvis was 12 when he got his first guitar in 1946, which was a birthday present from his Mother. It cost $12.95 at the Tupelo Hardware Store.
  • Elvis liked to read. Two of his favorite books were The Holy Bible and The Impersonal Life.
  • The Cryolophosaurus(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryolophosaurus) - a large theropod dinosaur, with a bizarre crest on its head that looked like a Spanish comb - is nicknamed 'Elvisaurus' because it's head crest resembled the pompadour hairstyle of Elvis in the 1950s.
  • Elvis was nominated for a "Grammy for Best Soundtrack Album or Recording of Original Cast from a Motion Picture or Television" for G.I. Blues and Blue Hawaii in 1961 and 1962.
  • Elvis wasn't always a singer - he worked in his high school library when he was a sophomore. He worked at the Precision Tool Company in Memphis. He also worked as an usher, and as a truck-driver. o Elvis once wrote a letter to then President Richard Nixon, asked to become an undercover narcotics agent. President Nixon responded by providing Elvis with a special agent badge for the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.
  • The FBI has well over 600 pages of files on Elvis.
  • Elvis is one of only few artists, include Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, inducted into both The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and The Country Music Hall of Fame.
  • Elvis gave a robe to Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) embroidered with the phrase "The Peoples Champion."
  • Elvis was offered the role of John Norman Howard in A Star Is Born by Barbra Streisand. Regrettably he did not get to take the role, purportedly because of Colonel Tom Parker.
  • Elvis' favorite actors were Marlon Brando and James Dean.
  • The book Elvis was reading at the time of his death was The Scientific Search for the Face of Jesus by Frank O. Adams.
  • When Elvis was in high school he was cut from the football team by the coach because he wouldn't trim his sideburns and ducktail.
  • Elvis received 3 Grammy Awards for his Gospel music.
  • Elvis received his first Black Belt in Karate in March of 1960.
  • On May 29th, 1967, Elvis and Priscilla had a second wedding reception at Graceland for those family and friends who could not attend their Las Vegas wedding.
  • Elvis last Top 20 hit was "Burning Love" which went to #2 on the charts.

HAPPY 75th BIRTHDAY ELVIS!

13 Things I Want to Do on My Birthday

Next week is my 59th birthday. The last birthday before I turn sixty - SIXTY! If you're like me that is one big, ugly number staring back at you. I still feel like I'm sixteen sometimes and when I was sixteen SIXTY sounded very, very, very, very old to me. SIXTY still sounds old to me but I don't feel old - except for those times when the bones creak, lol.

This being my last birthday before that scary number I am planning on having a great birthday month. I don't just have a birth day, my birthday seems to spread out over the whole month of January because my friend's schedules can't always allow for getting together on my actual birthday. So, I will be having several birthday celebrations and doing a bunch of different things for my birthday. My friends always ask me what I want to do so below is my wish list for my 59th Birthday - don't worry, I'm not putting that Mediterranean cruise on the list in respect of everyone's 2009 damaged wallets, but don't be surprised if it shows up for the big SIXTY next year if 2010 is a great year!
  1. Disneyland - I want to go to Disneyland. I would like to make this a yearly tradition. Hey, maybe for the big SIXTY I'll take a Disney Cruise!
  2. All You Can Eat Lobster and Crab Dinner - I have been jonesing for seafood. My New Year's dinner was fresh crab and sauteed garlic shrimp with a nice fresh sourdough baguette and a pile of butter for all. I ate until I was full but I guess it wasn't enough because I still want to sit down to a table covered in crab and lobster claws.
  3. I want to see Avatar. I want to see Avatar in a movie theater with 3-D glasses. I can see most films on DVD via my TV, but some films just need to be seen in a theater with hi-def stereo surround sound, the smell of theater popcorn and with other people.
  4. I want to spend the day around Newport Beach. I spent my teen years burning my skin, checking out the lifeguards and getting sand up my wazoo at Newport and I'd like to just doodle around there for part of the day for a little nostalgia - though I figure the only thing that hasn't changed much is getting sand up the wazoo.
  5. Pajamas made from the same stuff as the aloe infused socks I got from a friend for Christmas. My friend Cindy just gave me two pairs of THE SOFTEST SOCKS I have ever felt. In fact these socks are softer than anything I've ever felt. Oh man, you just sit there and stroke them - and the way they feel on your feet! I want that company to make pajamas - no, I want that company to make a full line of clothing. I'd never put anything else on again. I suspect this is a vain wish but there it is.
  6. The new Star Trek Movie DVD. I thought this new movie about the original Star Trek characters was excellent. They really got actors that fit - especially Spock. Plus it was greatly entertaining with a good story line, great lines and good fx.
  7. High Tea. I fell in love with high tea ages ago when I first went to a high tea at The Fairmont in San Francisco. The Fairmont has been serving High Tea for over 100 years now - they kinda got it down, but since I'm in Southern California I'll have to find somewhere here - anyone know a good place in Orange County, the Inland Empire or the Palm Springs area?
  8. A Microwave. My stupid microwave just quit last night. Stupid microwave. That's the cost of a good all you can eat seafood buffet!
  9. A full day at the movies. I have a few friends who will go to the movies, pay for one then watch two or three! Okay, this is kinda stealing or cheating but I'd like to try it just once to see if I can get away with it. Providing, of course, my aching back can stay the course and they have refillable popcorn and drinks.
  10. I want a Gourmet Cupcake Birthday Cake. I just did the most adorable Pop Art Cupcakes for The PopArtDiva Gift Gallery and every time I look at my cupcakes I want to eat them. I want to try a bunch of different flavors of the hot new gourmet cupcakes - mango, spicy chocolate - they got a bunch of them now.
  11. I want a Mani-Pedi with sparkly toes. Not a French manicure this time - something with color and dragonflies or butterflies and itty bitty rhinestones embedded - Bling is what I'm looking for!
  12. I want the new DROID phone. I love technology and I really love all the cool stuff these newest phones can do. I haven't checked out Google's new phone yet. Anyone wanna chime in on it? No, I don't want and iPhone because I don't want AT&T service and the unlocked iPhones have issues.
  13. I want to be thirty again. Oh well, this is a wish list after all. I'd settle for feeling thirty most of the time.
