ALL DRESSED UP
Pop Art Cowboy Boots Series - 2

Like Sunrise Sunset, Ya'll, this cowboy boot illustration was part of a series of original acrylic paintings on gallery wrap canvases.  I did this piece a little less realistic than Sunrise Sunset, using more of a pop art, cartoon style on the boot itself.  The background of this piece - as well as the whole series - is a cosmic theme, something you'll notice in much of my work.

I did some science fiction illustration once upon a time and my favorite part was always painting the skies. I've always loved suns, moons and comets and stars and they've shown up as my backgrounds in my work on a regular basis throughout much of my artistic life. (Take a peek at my series of Carousel Horses & Pierrots on my Carousel Corner Store for another example of my use of cosmic backgrounds.) Outer space elements have been a recurring theme in my art no matter what my main subject matter was, I love to use the cosmos as a background.

At the time of the series I was doing art shows mostly in Arizona and New Mexico so I incorporated a little bit of the desert in the background with a couple of Saguaros. When I first went out to the Southwest I thought the landscape had a kind of extraterrestrial look to it. Parts of the desert are very barren with a stark and foreign look that reminded me of some of the sci-fi illustrations I'd done of alien worlds.  With my love of painting space it seemed natural to incorporate that into this series.

This is painting two out of a series of four, so keep an eye out in the next couple of weeks for the last two pop art cowboy boots of the series.

I invite you to Go West with the second design from my Pop Art Cowboy Boot Series:

SUNRISE SUNSET, YA'LL
Pop Art Cowboy Boots Series

The inspiration for the original paintings actually came from some of my own cowboy boots I was wearing at the art shows.  When in Rome. . . . I was in the West so I wore western style clothing to the shows but in my typical bright colors.  I was kind of like a Pop Art Cowgirl for a while.  I was in love with the beautiful and colorful custom boots that were being made for the professional riding circuit - very Las Vegas glitz kind of costumes were part of the costuming for the professional horse circuit.  Some of these boots were and are works of art all on their own and those gorgeous boots inspired this series.

I invite you to Cowgirl or Cowboy Up with the first of my Pop Art Cowboy Boot Series:

LOST LYRICS to FAMOUS TV THEMES

TV THEME LYRICS LOST IN TIME

I was posting my Scarlett O'Hara Martini for St. Patrick's Day when I stumbled on the fact that the title song for Gone With The Wind - Tara's Theme, had lyrics, something that I was unaware of until today.  This is not the first time I've discovered some lost lyrics for some themes and tunes we're all familiar with.

MARDI GRAS POP ART

JAZZ CITY

Over the last 4 decades I've created and sold thousands of paintings and illustrations and I managed to keep copies of nearly all of them.  I was moving the studio around and pulled out one of my portfolios from about 20 years ago and found a bunch of really high quality, professionally photographed images of several original paintings I'd done.  I've done so much work over the years it's easy to forget one piece, even a series of pieces I've done.  Sad, but true.

They all had my signature bright colors, a kind of linear cartoon illustration style and that pop art look of the sixties I love, so I decided I'd scan them all in high resolution and do some digital re-purposing on them.

Since this Tuesday is Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday - the day before Ash Wednesday) I started on this one called "Jazz City".  I sold the painting over 20 years ago but I still like the way it captures the Carnival spirit of Mardi Gras.  I'm a little late getting it up in time for selling the products on my store - in fact, I'm too late but the spirit moved me so I went ahead with this one anyway.  Besides, I'm posting a Mardi Gras Martini for Fat Tuesday and I needed some Mardi Gras art for it!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Fat Tuesday, read about Mardi Gras here on Wikipedia.

Check out the MARDI GRAS MARTINI for your Fat Tuesday Celebrations!

JAZZ CITY is available on
Posters, Apparel, Cards, Cups & Gifts
at The PopArtDiva Gift Gallery.

Stay tuned because I also have some cool Pop Art Cowboy Boots and a couple of other fun images I'll be revisiting and updating!

HAPPY FAT TUESDAY!
ENJOY MARDI GRAS!

RAINBOW POP ART SHAMROCKS - Who Says Shamrocks Have to be Green?

MY POP ART SHAMROCKS
Rainbow Four Leaf Clovers for St. Patrick's Day

Of course I had to do it, did you think I would not pop art a shamrock in rainbow colors?

My Pop Art Shamrocks is a simple, classic pop art of a four leaf clover done in a rainbow which is perfectly fitting for Leprechauns and Irish folk who long for a little more than green on St. Patrick's Day.  Of course, the first shamrock is green, no self respecting Irishman would be caught out without at least one green shamrock, would they?

Just having a little fun with tradition - again!  Hey, I'm allowed, I'm half Irish on my Dad's side!

You can celebrate St. Patrick's Day with these Rainbow Pop Art Shamrocks on Posters, Apparel & Gifts from The PopArtDiva Gift Gallery.  Order now and you'll be ready to put some pop in St. Patty's Day!

NATIONAL WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT DAY

It's NATIONAL WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT DAY!

Ever wonder how we get holidays like "National Lemon Meringue Pie Day" or "National TV Dinner Day"?  Seriously, who says what day is "National Rum Punch Day" or "National Eat a Hoagie Day"?  Well, my friends, it's often the President of the United States who designates these special days!

That's right, POTUS has, amongst his/her other chores and duties, the authority to declare a commemorative event, week, day or month by proclamation and each sitting President gets tons of requests to do just that by special interest groups, P.R. firms and trade associations. It is at each President's discretion which requests get a special day, week or month and which ones get vetoed.  Whatever the hopeful holiday, it's obvious that the only ones that actually reach that desk in the Oval Room are backed by powerful special interests!

If you don't have a lobbyist or a White House aide in your back pocket, have no fear. The President of the United States is not the only authority who can declare a "special observance" day or event though he/she is the only one with the power to declare it a true "National" event.  State Legislatures, Governors and Mayors can also declare anything from a "National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day" (March 6th) to "National Jackass Day" (March 21st).  There seems to be no central clearing house in our government for "National Whatever You Want To Call It" holidays, which would explain why there might be two different dates for a particular commemorative day or event.

There is, however, a publication that keeps track of many of these special events called Chase's Calendar of Events published by McGraw-Hill that you can reference in case of a "National Whatever You Want To Call It" crisis.  There is even a blog called National Whatever Day you can use as a reference.

Though I realize this can all be confusing and difficult when it comes to planning parties, I cannot, in good conscience, expect our government to set up a committee, a department or a special ad hoc bunch of politicos who have nothing else to do, in order to get control of this growing deluge of holidays. After all, this would be fiscally irresponsible and a waste of taxpayers money. . . which, of course, makes me wonder if there is not already some secret group hidden away in the bowels of Congress (or Area 51) already "studying" this issue.

Of course, you know, I am now on a crusade to create "National Pop Art Diva Day" and "National Martini Diva Day". . . . . and I might even settle for "National Pop Art Diva Martini Day" for January 14th! Hey, it's no sillier than "National Goof-Off Day" (March 22) or "National Build a Scarecrow Day" (July 1st)!

HAPPY YOU CALLS IT YOU GETS IT DAY from PopArtDiva!

ANTI-VALENTINE POEM & MARTINIS ANYONE?

Sometimes Valentine's Day isn't all hearts and flowers.  If you are anti-Valentine this one's for you:

You brought me one flower
you stole from my yard,
and thought you'd get lucky
with a tacky red card.

You're a cheap little weasel
with no style and no class,
An uninspired boorish Cupid
dressed up like an ass.

I'd rather do laundry
than spend time with you,
or even spend V-day
with a case of the flu!

So pack up your willy
that itty, bitty wahoo,
cuz it's really quite silly
to think I'd do you!

GOOGLE EARTH ART PROJECT - The World's Masterpieces Now Just a Click Away

GOOGLE EARTH BRINGS THE WORLD'S MUSEUMS TO YOU!

If you love art, have always wanted to visit the world's great art museums and see the masterpieces of the great artists, but could not travel the world to indulge your passion Google has just answered your prayers.

The Art Project powered by Google is using Google Earth to bring the world's great art to you in a way you can't even experience standing in the actual museums.

Thanks to Amit Sood and other art lovers at Google you can now move from room to room within the virtual space and see 1,000 artworks painted by 400 artists in a way that being there in person can't match because Google is using "gigapixel" technology to zoom in so close you can see detailed brush strokes.  No museum in the world will let you get that close in person. This is how close Google's Art Project gets you to Van Gogh's Starry Night:

*Image from Google's Art Project

Seventeen major art museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA) and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Britain, the National Gallery in London, and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam are already on the list and Google has plans for adding more.  You can even create your own collection of favorites.

I am thrilled by this project and I applaud and thank Google, All participating Museums and Galleries, Amit Sood and all those at Google who worked to bring the project to the internet.  This is what the web was meant to be, a tool by the people and for the people, a means of disseminating culture and unique experiences, information and interaction.

With this phenomenal Art Project Google lives up to it's namesake and brings to the internet the beauty of great art to the 100th power with gigapixel imagery and a powerful use of today's technology.

Bravo!

*The images on this post are screen prints from Google's Art Project and I have used only portions of them to illustrate the quality and power of Google's technology in bringing the world's great art to the masses.  My intent is to educate (teach) and inform (report) the public of this wonderful and inspired project, not to infringe on any intellectual property but simply to share my discovery of what I consider an absolutely amazing and generous art instruction and sharing tool:

"the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright"

HEART ART & Origins of the Heart Symbol

HEART POP ART
A little love just in time for Valentine's Day and a little background on the Heart Symbol and it's association with Love and Valentine's Day.

Ever wonder why our symbol for a heart doesn't look anything like the human heart?  I was thinking about that when I was designing this Pop Art Heart Design for The PopArtDiva Gift Gallery for Valentine's Day and I decided to do a little research to find out the origins of this universally accepted symbol for the heart.

There's no definitive answer to where the heart symbol came from but there are a few clues. It all pretty much boiled down to these two theories:
  • The seventh century B.C. city-state of Cyrene traded the rare, now extinct, plant called silphium which was used as a means for birth control. Since the seedpod of the silphium looks exactly like a valentine's heart, this was sited by many as the birth of the modern Valentine Heart.
  • The other theory involves the similarity of the contemporary heart symbol to various parts of the female anatomy or, when the heart is inverted, part of the male reproductive equipment!
The heart symbol was promoted widely by the Sacred Heart cult starting in the Middle Ages and this may well have been the beginning of the dissemination of today's classic heart symbol.  Whatever the origins, this is the main visual symbol associated with Valentine's Day and love.

Today we even use this heart symbol to replace the word "love" and I can make a good guess that practice started with the ad campaign by advertising agency Wells Rich Greene in the mid-1970s to save New York from bankruptcy and the bad P.R. it was drowning in - remember the famous garbage strike of 1976?  The actual graphic was designed by graphic artist Milton Glaser, who did it pro bono!

The state of Virginia also used the heart in their 1969 ad campaign "Virginia is for Lovers" which featured the iconic red heart along with the copy but this was not a rebus (a word symbol where an image replaces a word or part of a word).  The use of the heart for the word "love" in the New York campaign had the powerful verbal and visual impact to become part of American zeitgeist and pop culture.  So powerful, in fact, that in today's culture the word "heart" is often used in place of the word "love":
I ♥ N.Y. = I Love New York = I Heart New York

In 1977 Composer Steven Karmen wrote a song called "I Love New York" as part of the campaign which was declared the National Anthem of New York by Governor Hugh Carey in 1980:

Now that's a prime example of the power a graphic image can have on the mind, the heart and the culture of it's environment!

From I ♥ N.Y. TO I ♥ POP ART!

All this of was rolling around in my head as I designed my newest Heart Pop Art and I made the decision to keep the image as simple as possible with just a touch of pop art style.  Whether you're looking for Valentine Gifts or a unique Heart Graphic to license, my Heart Pop Art will bring that historical shape to you with a contemporary Pop Art Diva touch.
And, of course, it gives me the chance to say:
THANKS FOR STOPPING BY!

Wondering about the History of Valentine's Day?
