Plus I like the balance of the number three and wanted to minimize the drama a bit because most of life is neither greatly happy nor greatly sad.

COSMIC MIME was directly inspired by Cirque de Soleil.  I had just come back from doing shows in Las Vegas and I got comped some tickets to see the show. As always, the entire production was impressive, but I loved the costumes the most, I always do. I'm definitely a frustrated fashion designer who just can't sew worth beans. 

Let me be perfectly honest, I don't like sewing, so I do fashion illustrations instead and sometimes they turn into actual art pieces. That's what happened to this one. It just progressed from a quick sketch while trying to recall a particular costume to this space traveling Cosmic Mime.

MIMES 'R US is a representation of my visit to an alternate carnival universe where I am a mime and my only company is the marionettes from my act.

The original was a colored pencil drawing which sold before it was even exhibited. I was a little sad because it was a fantasy self portrait, and I  would like to have kept it. But he offered me too much money, and I figured I could always do another one.  I did, it just wasn't the same imagery*, because I never repeat myself. I actually don't think it's even possible for me because once my imagination  has visited somewhere, it likes to move on.

CLOWDER OF CATS was a design that emerged from trying to discipline my cat. He was being a royal pill and I remember saying to him, "You're nothing but a cute nose, some whiskers, big eyes, pointed ears and a twitchy tail. Don't get cocky with me!" Like that had any effect on him.

It did give me a visual though, so I grabbed a pencil and sketched that exact description minus the tail. The tail just didn't work.

I've been doing it on some form or another since AND it has been "borrowed" many times from many sources for almost as long. Most likely, because it is a very simple graphic of a basic cat and very easy to draw. That's the secondary reason it gets ripped off. The primary reason everybody copies it? It's cute.

Besides, who knows?  It's actually possible somebody came up with basically the same design by themselves. It is pretty simple. There's nothing detailed about it, but it includes all the elements that define a cat accept, possibly, the tail. Either way my attitude is 'live & let live', I really can't blame folks for wanting to draw it either way.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
I had not concept in mind when I started GIGO, I just wanted to paint one of my colorful little freaky characters to pick up my spirits.  I had an arrow at the end of one of his hair spikes and as I got close to the end of painting I added an additional arrow on the other side coming in.  I looked at it, laughed and said, "GiGo" which is the acronym for "garbage in, garbage out" and I thought that was highly appropriate for the computer age, the internet and social media.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
So, there I was, awake in the middle of the night, face glued to my smartphone, my tired eyes literally vibrating and it occurred to me that maybe I was being blinded (or eaten!) by my digital devices. Maybe not such a strange thought when you consider how much of our time we all now spend glued to some kind of flickering screen as images speed by our eyeballs.
In the firm grip of my insomnia I was inspired and out pops this little guy (girl, robot, skeleton, whatever) some time later.  I love him. And I named him OMG! because of his expression. He has now spawned an upcoming series of fun, contemporary painting commentaries on the internet, social media and our love and addition to our electronic gadgets. I am calling them Meemogies™ (as in meme-emoji).
