FLOWERS OF MY HEART Colored Pencil Drawing
Like many illustrators who have been boxed in by client commissions for many years, I love being able to just let a drawing happen organically! This is an intuitive and freeing process which allows a creative work to grow pretty much on it's own, guided solely by the instinct of an experienced artist.
FLOWERS OF MY HEART is a result of this process. Just starting with the outline of a heart, it grew into a surprising little surreal landscape all on it's own, complete with fantasy flowers, fluffy clouds morphing out of an abstract area of heart "tissue". When the heart was finished I accented it by framing it in repeat patterns of the flowers and the cross hatched border.
I like it. I think I'll do more hearts this way!

I absolutely love bulb flowers. My favorites include Irises, Tiger Lilies and Calla Lilies, all of which I grew in my garden back in California. Here in Arizona they're not as easy to grow and I miss them. I loved going out to my garden and picking fresh flowers for my house and I loved just seeing hundreds of them pop up every Spring.
Since I couldn't grow them, I drew them!

When I moved back to Arizona I had little luck growing the usual flowers that I love, the heat is simply too intense for most of them to survive. Instead of my wonderful Irises, Lillies and Roses, I was surrounded by flora that was mean! Cacti with stickers and thorns that could really bite back and odd little, juicy looking things called succulents! I was not happy until, all of a sudden after a huge monsoon rain, all these GORGEOUS flowers started popping up all over my yard!
It was then I took a closer look at the truly unique and beautiful things growing around me. I watched as the cacti gave forth flowers, even fruit in some cases. I was amazed as the succulents grew into a rainbow of colors and cool alien shapes and forms. I was hooked and started collecting them to grow myself. I now have a collection that is taking over my decks and overflowing into my yard and putting out pups (little baby plants from the mother) like a rabbit in heat.
I itched to get some of this surprising color and life into some art and this is my first drawing. I started with an easy one, a Hen & Chick succulent that was one of the first I bought. The range of colors in succulents is amazing and I wanted to capture that in the subtle way these plants do.

It is a 7-1/2" x 7-3/4" image drawn on an 8-1/2" x 11" Strathmore Art Paper done entirely in Prismacolor Colored Pencils.
Prints are available in an 8-1/2" x 11" format on heavy weight, high gloss photo paper done in Archival inks.

CAROUSEL ART - Horses, Exotic Animals & More
I got interested in Carousels way back in the eighties. I was in love with the intricate carvings from the masters like Loofe, Mangels, Illions and, of course, Dentzel, to name just a few. Here I've taken many of the classics and recreated them with my lovely Prismacolor colored pencils on pastel accented, colored Canson papers. In some I've made some changes to suit my personal color tastes and preferences, that's what art is all about for me, putting my own creative touch on the world.
I think these are beautiful for nurseries, children's rooms and for Carousel collectors.
I have quite a few of these so check back often for new prints being added. The originals are all sold, sorry, though there may be some new ones in the future when and if my muse takes me on that ride!

CLOWNS, MASKS, JESTERS & PIERROTS, A Circus of Art
I love drawing faces, have a thing for masks and I am a huge fan of the Cirque du Soleil so this series of colored pencil drawings is a joy for me. It amazes me how each of my little guys takes on their own personalities during the drawing process. Each one surprises me as it emerges from the tips of my pencils.
I think these are wonderful for children's rooms, nurseries and, of course, for mask and clown collectors such as myself.
The originals (sorry, all sold) were drawn with Prismacolors on colored Canson paper and the images measure 7" x 7" and are printed on a heavy weight, high gloss 8-1/2" x 11" photo paper using archival inks.
A faux mat surrounds each print but there is enough room to mat around them with a mat cut in your personal choice of colors to match your decor.
