OLD SCHOOL FRIDAYS - Neo Soul?

When MrsGrapevine posted today's Old School Friday topic I was kerplotzed! I have never heard of neo-soul which left me in a quandry - what do I post today? So, being the curious little pop culture diva that I am I had to do some researchin' and guess what I found - it includes one of my favorite types of music - Gospel!

I love Gospel choirs especially - there is nothing more uplifting and just plain joyous than a gospel choir going to town - even makes me want to go to church, heathen that I can be at times, lol. This is a little more soulful and jazzy - great for sitting back and having a nice, relaxing martini (oh, hey, Jesus drank wine okay?)

So I went for the highest rated and most viewed video under "neo soul gospel" in YouTube because I figured it would be the be the best and I was not disappointed. No, it's not retro but we all need to try some new things every once in a while!

  2. Hey Pop Art Diva,

Neo Soul (or new soul) is when new artists pattern themselves after artists of the past e.g. Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye immediately come to mind. It just a new term for a new era of soul singer who worship the song styling of singers of the past.

  3. Pjazzy - then I'm a Neo Soul artist because I pattern my pop art after Warhol and Peter Max!

    Cool!

  6. Pop Art Diva, Absolutely you are a Neo Soul Artist! You have taken on the responsibility of bringing the world of the 50's and 60's to the consciousness of the uninformed and those of us who have forgotten or just want to reminisce. That's why I like coming over here, it has become a safe haven in today's world of chaos. I know if I visit your spot for a moment I can relive times when life was simplistic. My thanks to you :-)

  7. Neo Soul lesson was cut off, boomer! But thanks for the intro.
Wonder why the gospel association ?
Was it called something else or is neo soul a discriptive of historical musical beats done by folks back in the day? Worthy of research. Would love to identify parts of gospel artist's music that had Neo Soul
Wonder what boomers are blogging about Neo Soul?

  8. Beverly - I'd never heard of neo-soul so I searched it on YouTube and got gospel videos too and I love gospel. This video though was kind of a tutorial and the music was really pleasant, mellow jazzy.

I love music but I'm by no stretch an expert on it in any style or decade - I just know what I like when I hear it, lol.

Pjazzypar - I love that idea, it suits what I do with my retro art exactly. Malcolm said that the term could be applied to any of the arts!
Thanks so much for your comments and your visits here!

Rosie - I'm sorry about the technical issues. I had some trouble getting it to play at first too and thought it was my ISP slowing down again. I think this video was "high quality" which made it much slower to load.

  9. PopArtDiva,

I came back to see if I could hear the audio and WAH-LA!!!

I know we play upbeat gospel music in my church but it doesn't sound like neo-soul. I think if I heard that kind of music, I might forget about the "worship" and think I was in a club (LOL)!

  10. Beverly - from the definition I would surmise that gospel would be only part of neo-soul. Pjazzy says it is "when new artists pattern themselves after artists of the past" and I gather there is no restrictions placed on what kind of artists or music is being "re-styled".

I think I might have to visit you and go to your church so I can enjoy the music!!!! What's good for you?? LOL
